Public nominations for the 2027 Young Mining Professional of the Year Awards close on 30 November 2026 at 12 PM PST. That leaves 31 days from this check to prepare a nomination recognising leadership and innovative thinking in metals and mining. The cutoff is at noon in the stated timezone, not at the end of the day.

Who Can Be Nominated?

Nominees must be under 40 on 31 December 2026 and currently engaged in the metals and mining industry. Young Mining Professionals runs the awards in partnership with The Northern Miner, seeking people who have created value for their companies, shareholders and themselves over the past year and throughout their careers.

The programme recognises two recipients through these awards:

  • Peter Munk Award: the male recipient.
  • Eira Thomas Award: the female recipient.

The selection committee comprises YMP Directors and Senior Executives at The Northern Miner and chooses a winner in each category from the submitted nominees.

Turn Leadership Into an Evidence-Led Story

Choose examples that make the nominee's own contribution clear. Explain the challenge, the decisions they took and what changed as a result. A project outcome or commercial improvement is more persuasive when you can show the starting point, the timeframe and the person's specific role.

Support the account with measurable results and a concrete example of who benefited. Where success depended on a team, recognise those contributions while explaining the nominee's leadership. Agree the use of confidential figures and supporting comments before submitting them.

Crafting Winning Awards Entries can help you organise that evidence into a clear problem, solution and result.

Plan the Submission, Not Just the Deadline

Use the nomination link on the organiser's official awards page and check access to the form early. Confirm the required answers, supporting material and any charges with the organiser before finalising your nomination.

The upcoming event's date and place are still to be determined. Keep ceremony arrangements separate from the nomination deadline and wait for the organiser's confirmed details before making travel plans.
